So this
is fair.
The Google Machine and the Twitterverse had been
chattering for the past two days about Peyton Manning’s passing yards record
that wasn’t. Manning had apparently surpassed Drew Brees’ single-season passing
record by a single yard when he retired to the bench last Sunday. Later it came
to light that seven of those yards were gained on what clearly was a
lateral from Manning to Eric Decker. Manning hadn’t beaten Brees’ mark after
all. There is a long history
of the NFL Plays reviewing plays like this. The record book is corrected as
needed. Getting it right, you might think, would be the only concern.
But this is Peyton Manning. A guy everyone loves;
a man who drives a sensible car and wants us all to have inexpensive pizza.
He’s 37-years old and having the greatest season by a quarterback like
ever, people! Love him! Worship him! He does play well in cold weather! His
record in the postseason is a small data sample! And besides…
He would’ve broken the record any way.
Yeah, he probably would’ve.
But he didn’t.
Whose printing up the “Drew Brees 5476*” t-shirts?
