No Such Thing as Too Much of a Good Thing

Can you have too many quarterbacks?

I think I’m going to add “Why was Tom Brady throwing to Steve Maneri?” to my list of unanswerable questions, somewhere between “Did Oswald act alone?” and “Why hasn’t someone been able to come up with a decent frozen pizza?” Anyway, Brady did have the offense humming before the inexplicable Pick 6 and he recovered to throw a sweet back shoulder throw to Kenbrell Thompkins for a TD on the next drive before retiring to the bench late in the first quarter.

Garoppolo’s overall numbers weren’t dazzling (6/12/72) but he still managed to throw two absolutely delicious TD passes. The first was a swing pass to gritty fullback/H-back/tight end James Develin. The second came after Jimmy G. dodged a few bullets in the pocket and found Brandon “Red Zone” LaFell in the back of the end zone. Garoppolo continues to look like the pigskin version of a young George Clooney, a star in the making.

Unlike last week Ryan Mallett also played well (7/11/92), running for one TD and throwing for another. He also made a nice read at the line of scrimmage, checking out of a pass to a running play that Roy Finch took to the house. The rainbow to Brian Tyms, who high pointed the TD catch in tight coverage was a sweet, sweet play and a throw with the kind of touch thought to be lacking in Mallett’s game. Have to say he popped on that throw.

Mallett may even have created a market for his services and freed up a roster spot for an extra cornerback, linebacker or defensive tackle…

America’s Crazy Ex-Girlfriend
Is Tony Romo’s back really that good? Is Dallas really counting on Brandon Weeden if Romo needs a spinectomy? Cowboy’s owner/GM Jerry Jones is an Arkansas alumni. Mallett is a former Razorback. Let’s do this thing!

The Black Hole
Matt Schaub is making Texans’ fans feel good about Ryan Fitzpatrick. If, by feeling good, you mean, “At least he’s not Matt Schaub.” The Raiders have bomb-throwing quarterbacks in their franchise’s DNA. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Ryan “Big Swingin’” Mallett!

Waiting for the Inevitable
Has Sam Bradford been placed on season ending injured reserve, yet? That’s going to happen. What’s the over/under? Week 3? All those wide receivers the Rams have been stockpiling can’t throw the ball to themselves!

The Stars at Night
We shouldn’t totally discount Bill O’Brien and the Texans – as long as we’re not expecting the Pats to get Andre Johnson in return. Mallett’s value diminishes significantly without Johnson to throw to. I’m guessing Belichick is holding out for a 3rd round pick but a 4th would get this done, wouldn’t it?
