So,
crazy weekend, huh?
The
Rams took the 49ers to overtime again only this time it didn’t end in a tie;
this time, the Rams won. Andrew Luck took a standing eight count three times
and still managed to land a knockout punch before the bell rang. The Seahawks
won on the road with rookie QB Russell Wilson writing his name large in the box
score and the Steelers won in Baltimore – without Ben Roethlisberger!
Then,
of course, there are the Chiefs. It starts to feel like those of us who have
not been touched by gun violence are the lucky ones. Death happens. Reality
imposes its gritty, tough guy persona even upon the fantastical land of flying oblate
spheroids we visit electronically every Sunday afternoon.
Brady
Quinn? Brady Quinn.
Proof
that reality visits and it leaves a mark but we still have the fantastical;
dark and weird and whimsical and unexpected.
Drew
Brees throws five picks.
A
Harbaugh was once again involved in a controversial handshake. Mike Tomlin did
come off something of a dick but what was John Harbaugh looking for? Perhaps a
heartfelt thank you for a Ravens game plan that didn’t feature Ray Rice? Dude!
Mike Tomlin does not want to hang
with you. That’s all it is. Move past it. Seriously, he’s kind of a dick,
anyway.
The
St. Louis Rams own the San Francisco 49ers. And the entire NFC West.
Unfortunately, they aren’t even renting when it comes to the rest of the
league.
The
New York Jets finally bench Mark Sanchez only it isn’t Tim Tebow trotting onto
the field, it’s Greg
McElroy! McElroy threw the first seven passes of his yet to be storied
career, completing five including a 1-yard TD pass for the 7-6 win. Given the
opponents were the Arizona Cardinals (who seem to really hate football) I’m not
sure we learned a lot about Greg McElroy. Seven passes is a small data sample,
etc.
I
did learn something about Mark Sanchez, though.
I
learned Mark Sanchez’s contract makes him virtually
untradeable. These facts tend to come out when your team is absolutely
desperate to trade you. It seems amazing that the Jets traded up to the #6 pick
for Sanchez, then incredibly bid against themselves in signing Sanchez to the
contract extension that now makes him virtually untradeable. I guess the point
is it isn’t Mark Sanchez’ fault the Jets were so incredibly wrong about Mark
Sanchez. Or the point is that the Jets were so
incredibly amazingly wrong about Mark Sanchez.
It
happens.
Tim
Couch. Joey Harrington. David Carr. Rick Mirer. Somebody was incredibly
amazingly wrong about each and every one of them.
And
sometimes, Brady Quinn happens.
Unexpected.
Definitely whimsical.
Be
cool.
