The Improbable Sometimes Becomes the Inevitable

Manning to Moss.  It could happen.  The Niners already have Moss under contract and they also appear to be one of the three finalist for Peyton Manning’s rose.  It seems highly improbable that both Manning and Moss should enjoy a career renaissance with San Francisco.  In some regards, either one independently seems a longshot.  Moss is coming off a disgraceful 2010 performance followed by a year of inactivity.  Manning is coming off 4 neck surgeries (estimated).  And yet, Peyton Manning signing with the 49ers would seemingly guarantee a Super Bowl run for San Francisco in 2012, with or without a significant contribution from Moss.  If Moss can contribute (let’s set the over/under at 12 touchdowns) the 2012 season could become its own chapter in the Book of Football.

You Gotta Give a Little to Get a Lot…
So, I figured out what I would do if I were Bill Belichick.  I’d let BenJarvus Green-Ellis go and I’d add that money ($2m?) to whatever offer I had on the table for Wes Welker and see if that could get it done.

Like I have any idea what’s going on (generally).

Anyway, the first week of free agency is baked.  If you’re a Patriots’ fan (or a Steelers’ or Packers’ fan), you’ve probably been underwhelmed.  Worse, division rivals have been hogging the headlines.  Who saw the Bills as favorites in the Mario Williams derby?  The Bills have done their best to put themselves in the conversation in the AFC East.  If the Dolphins sign Matt Flynn, is the division suddenly anyone’s to win?  Well, probably not and definitely too early to tell.

Despite the lack of big names or hoped for additions, I’m quietly optimistic.  The Patriots obviously have a plan.  Keeping Dan Connolly is reassuring.  Keeping the special team spots filled was going to happen so why not just get that done?  DE Jonathan Fanene and S Steve Gregory look like prototypical Belichickian free agents.  Enough tape to make an informed decision about the player’s skill set with the promise of a reasonable contract.  Think Roman Phifer.

I’ll be ecstatic if they’re both that good.

I’m hating on the Anthony Gonzalez signing.  Or maybe the Patriots secured the services of an old gypsy woman to remove the curse that has afflicted him with season-ending injuries.  The WR we’ve been told we need over and over again, Brandon Lloyd, remains on the market.

It would be nice to pick up Kamerion Wimbley but I would think the price may be too damn high for New England.  I’ll muse upon the possibility until he signs with another team.

Meanwhile, in other news…
Meanwhile, we continue to wait for Peyton Manning’s other shoe to drop.  Tennessee, which I previously discounted, is of course one of the finalists now along with San Fran and Denver.  The 49ers look like a slam dunk from a “I want one more Super Bowl ring” point of view.  Winning a Super Bowl for the Titans seems a longer shot but it also features the “Suck it, Indy” angle, with two chances to remind the Colts and their fans just how good the sex was.  And that they will never have it again.

If it was me, I’d absolutely sign with the Titans.
